This piece covers the shoulder of the wearer.
It is square or rectangular in shape and is normally about one foot
square.
It is fastened by cords to the other pieces of armor, particularly
the corselet.
For this reason, the sode can never be worn without the do-maru,
here-ate, haramaki, or haramaki-do.
In battle a piece of cloth (sode jiruchi) is sometimes tied over the
sode.
This cloth is dyed or painted with a badge identifying the wearer.
