Area: The barrier can cover any AREA from as small as 5' square to as lorge as 2 square, i.e. 20' x 20' under ground, 60' x 60' outdoors.
Effect: The cleric
employs this spell to set up a wall of circling, razor-sharp blades.
These whirl and flash in
endless movement around an immobile point.
Any creature which attempts
to pass through the blade barrier suffers 8-64 (8d8) hit points of damage
in doing so.
The barrier remains for
3 melee rounds for every level of experience of the cleric casting it.
DMG: This spell is
absolutely stationary.
It does not move in any
way except with respect to the circling of the blades around the fixed
point of the spell center.
The plane of rotation of
the blades can be horizontal, vertical, or anything in between, however.
DMG.save: Note that
creatures within the AREA of the barrier when it is invoked are entitled
to a saving throw, and if this save is made, the blades are avoided and
no damage is taken.
Blade Barrier: Again, although the PH
states that there is no
ST here,
the DMG makes it clear that any creature
within the area of effect of the barrier
when the spell is cast does get a ST,
and if this is successful, no
damage is taken. The PH also contains an
error when discussing the limits of the
barrier, because it triples the dimensions
for the area of the spell outdoors, whereas
only the range of spells is affected in this
way. The upper limit is therefore 2" cubed
(20' x 20' x 20').

Question: Is it possible
for a high-level Cleric and MagicUser to work in conjunction to create
a moving Blade barrier?
A Telekinesis
spell would provide the motion.
Answer: The sixth-level
Clerical spell blade barrier would not work
for this. The PH
describes it as a “whirl and flash in
endless movement around
an immobile point,” and the DMG reiterates
this under Clerical Spell explanation as an
absolutely stationary spell.
This, however, does not mean that some-
thing similar to what you
suggest is not possible to accomplish. You
should work with your DM
on this. Ask him whether or
not, after careful study
of the section in the DMG on spell
research, he
will allow you to create
a new spell, and, if so, what the requirements
to research it would be
(i.e. cost, materials, time, etc.). — WN
