Effect: This spell
causes total, impenetrable darkness in
the area of its effect.
lnfravision
or ultravision are useless. Neither normal
nor magical light will work
unless a light or continual light spell is used. In
the former event, the darkness
spell is negated by the light spell and vice
versa.
MC: A bit of bat fur and either a drop of pitch or a piece of coal.
Variant:
Other spell variations are minor.
Asmiak's darkness 15' radius
uses a tiny
vial of ink smashed to the
ground, serving
as the center of the spell
effect, as
well as bat fur. Thus, the
spell cannot be
moved once cast, and the
ink seems less
effective than pitch or
coal, because the
spell lasts only eight rounds,
plus one
per level of the caster.
Asmiak specifies
giant
octopus ink, but Casimur has subsequently
experimented with giant
squid sepia, and reports
that it also produces
darkness, although of but
six
rounds (plus one per level
of the caster)
duration. - The
Book of the Silver Talon

WSG: The magical darkness
created by this
spell (or any other similar
magical effect) is much blacker than the
darkness that normally prevails
in the wilderness at night, even
under a moonless or overcast
sky. The maximum safe movement
rate under this lightless
condition is one-half of the figure given
for natural darkness.
