Effect: When used
by a cleric,
this spell will detect whether
or not a person or monster is under the influence of a charm spell.
Up to 10 creatures can be
thus checked before the spell wanes.
DMG: Charm spells
cast by creatures entitle the charmee to a saving throw versus magic,
and if the save is successful,
the detect charm spell does NOT pick up the fact that the charm exists.
Detect Charm: There
is some scope for
confusion over the DMG
entry that says
that charm spells cast by
creatures
entitle the charmee to a
ST
vs. magick <spells>,
and if the save is successful,
the detect charm spell does
NOT pick
up the fact that the charm
exists. Well,
that makes no sense--if
you're not charmed,
there's no charm to detect.
But what the
entry means is that when
a creature with
an innate charm ability
(eg, vampires,
nixies) successfully charms
a victim, that
victim is entitled to a
save if a
detect charm is cast subsequently.
Thus a
charming vampire is even
more villainous
than a charming MU, for
the vampire's
handiwork might never be
spotted.....

Undetectable Charm:
The reverse of the spell protects from such detection,
but only a single creature
can be so shielded.
Shukenja:
This spell indicates whether a creature is under the effects of a charm
spell.
Individuals charmed by creatures
receive a saving throw, success indicating that no charm was detected.
Shukenja.Reverse:
The spell's reverse protects fully from this detection, but only one creature
may be shielded.
