Effect: This spell turns an ordinary weapon into a magical one.
The weapon is the equivalent
of a +1 weapon but has no bonuses whatsoever.
Thus, arrows, axes, bolts,
bows, daggers, hammers, maces, spears, swords,
etc. can be made into enchanted weapons.
Two small (arrows, bolts,
daggers, etc.)
or one large (axe, bow,
hammer, mace, etc.) weapon can be affected by the spell.
Note that successful hits
by enchanted missile weapons cause the spell to be broken,
but that otherwise the spell
duration lasts until the time limit based on the level of experience of
the magic-user casting it expires, i.e. 40 rounds (4 turns) in the case
of an 8th level magic-user.
MC: Powdered lime && carbon.

Q: In issue #146,
you discussed the
enchant an item spell and
said that a
magical weapon?s bonus was
not a
spell effect. What about
the enchanted
weapon spell?
A: As described in
the AD&D 1st Edition
game, the fourth-level spell
enchanted
weapon did not produce a
true ?plus.? The
spell allowed the recipient
weapon to
harm creatures hit only
by magical weapons,
but it did not bestow any
bonuses
whatsoever. Consequently,
I tread lightly
around the subject in the
column. The
new enchanted weapon spell,
however,
does bestow a true bonus
and is useful for
enchanting most weapons,
as described in
the 2nd Edition PHB, page
157.

ADQ: What good is the enchanted weapon
spell, if it confers "no bonuses whatsoever"
(PH pg. 76)? Is this really a
4th level spell effect?
ADA: If a +1 weapon is required to damage
a creature, this spell will allow any weapon
treated to inflict normal damage. Since the
caster must be 7th level, presumably accompanied
by characters of similar power, most
probably have at least 1 magickal weapon;
but if not, this spell can be critical (despite
its long casting Time).
This spell is most useful, however, to
higher level characters adventuring on other
<dimensions> of existence, where a weapon's status
may be reduced from magickal to mundane
due to the inter<dimensional> distance from the
weapon's point of origin. In addition, when
an intelligent magickal weapon becomes non-magickal
as a result of such travel, its INT
is trapped incommunicado; this spell
will restore it to magickal status, thus
enabling communication and the USE of the
weapon's special abilities.
