Effect: When a cleric
casts a find traps spell,
all traps
-- concealed normally or
magically --
of magical or mechanical
nature become visible to him or her.
Note that this spell is
directional,
and the caster must face
the desired direction in order to determine if a trap is laid in that particular
direction.
DMG:
This spell will be 10% likely per level of the cleric casting it to be
able to note the type of magic involved,
i.e. alteration, divination,
etc.,
if it is a magical or magically-concealed
trap.
Find Traps: There is a 10% chance per
level of the casting priest that, when a
magickal trap is detected, the type of magick
involved (alteration, enchantment/charm, etc)
will be detected also. The
spell will also reveal the form (but NOT the
Name) of a glyph of warding, but this
will
not mean that the priest will necessarily
know what the glyph might do, unless the
same glyph and its effects have been
observed before.
(Imagine #30)
WSG: Similar to detect
snares & pits (see above), this
spell can remain in effect
while the caster turns or moves at a normal
speed. However, note that
it is only useful to discover the existence
of traps “of a magical or
mechanical nature” - it will not
reveal the presence of a
covered pit, for instance, or a trip wire
(unless the wire is connected
to a snare or a missile-firing device,
or some other accessory
that constitutes a trap “of mechanical
nature”).
Q. Does a find
traps spell indicate the
exact nature of a trap,
and thus how
to overcome it, or merely
indicate
that a trap is present?
A. Find traps
reveals the presence of
traps both mechanical and
magickal,
but NOT their exact natures.
There is a
10% chance per level of
the caster
that the type of magick
involved
(divination, alteration,
etc) will be
revealed, but NOT what the
spell
actually is. A magick
mouth spell
would NOT be found by a
find
traps.
(Imagine #13)
Q. Once a trap is
disarmed, would a find
traps reveal its
Presence, and would
the spell show poison to
be part of a
trap?
A. No, to both parts
of the question. A
trap simply isn't a trap
when it has
been disarmed, so its Presence
would
not be shown by the spell.
This,
incidentally, makes it a
good way of
cross-checking whether a
thief has
successfully used the remove
traps
skill on any particular
object.
The wording
of the spell makes it
clear that a find traps
will only reveal
whether a trap is present,
and
whether it is mechanical
or magickal.
The DMG goes on to say that
the
nature of the magic involved
may
also be revealed -- alteration,
divination,
etc. There is no mention
of
being able to say more about
a trap
than that it is mechanical
-- and
poisoning a trap is only
a modification
to its mechanical nature.
