Effect: When this
spell is CAST, the magic-user is able to assume the form of any creature
-- from as small as a wren
to as large as a hippopotamus --
and its form of locomotion as well.
The spell does not give the
other abilities (attack, magic, etc.),
nor does it run the risk
of changing personality and mentality.
No "system shock" check
is required.
Thus, a magic-user changed
to an owl could fly, but his or her vision
would be human;
a change to a black
pudding would enable movement under doors or along halls and ceilings,
but not
the pudding's offensive or defensive capabilities.
Naturally, the strength
of the new form must be sufficient to allow normal movement.
The spell caster can change
his || her form as often as desired, the change requiring only 5 segments.
Damage to the polymorphed
form is computed as if it were inflicted upon the magic-user,
but when the magic-user
returns to his or her own form, from 1 to 12 (d12) points of damage are
restored.
Shukenja:
When this spell is cast, the shukenja is able to assume the form of any
creature-from a small bird up to a great horse.
There is no system shock,
but the polymorphed shukenja gains only the form and its locomotion,
not any special attacks,
magical abilities, etc. The shukenja may change from one form to another
(takes five
segments) as often as desired
during the spell's duration. Damage to the polymorphed form is done to
the
shukenja, but upon return
to human form 1-12 points are restored to the shukenja.
Wu
Jen: Except as otherwise noted, this spell is similar to the 4th-level
shukenja spell of the same name.

in wording (Caster only/The caster), the 2 versions seem to be identical>
Q: If a character
turns into a fish
with a polymorph self spell
or
potion, can he breathe underwater?
A: A polymorph self
spell can provide the
caster with functional gills,
just as it can
provide the caster with
functional wings.

Q: Can a spell-caster
still cast spells if
he is polymorphed or reincarnated?
A: Yes, probably.
Polymorph self allows
spell-casting if the new
form has prehensile
digits and is capable of
speech. Note,
however, that all equipment
carried polymorphs
with the caster, so spell
components
won't always be available.
If a
polymorph other spell was
used, the victim
might "lose" his components
as above,
and he will lose all memories
and abilities
if he assumes the mentality
of his new
form. What happens when
a character is
reincarnated is up to the
DM. Generally,
the character can still
use his professional
skills if his new form will
physically allow
it, although further advancement
is not
always possible.

Q: My character was
recently polymorphed
into a worm. Another
character cut my character
in half. If
the two halves were allowed
to
grow into two worms, would
I have
two characters if the polymorph
spell was dispelled? Wouldn?t
the
two characters be identical
and
friendly toward each other
(not
prone to kill each other
as two
clones would)?
A, Wormy PC: Characters
retain their hit
points and intellect when
subjected to
polymorphing, so your character
should
have been the worlds smartest
and toughest worm,
at least until he failed
an intelligence
check and assumed a worm's
mentality (if a worm can
be said to have a
mentality). Your character
would be dead
if chopped in half while
still mentally a
"person" If the character
reverted to
worm mentality before being
cut in half, it
still would be one tough
worm (having
your PC's hit points), but
it might very well
survive being chopped in
half if anyone
were persistent enough to
actually do it.
Many DMs, however, would
rule that the
polymorph spell could no
longer be dispelled
once the change in personality
took
place. If the magic on either
or both halves
of the worm were dispelled,
you?d have
one or two halves of a dead
character.
Each "new" worm still is
only half a character,
even if allowed to grow
into a whole
worm.

ADQ: If a Polymorph Self spell is used
to change to a creature capable of moving
in the astral & ethereal planes
(xorn, phase spider, Ki-rin, etc.), can
the character then also use the appropriate
"mode of locomotion" and go
plane-traveling?
ADA: No. The Polymorph Self spell
allos locomotion only within the plane
in which it is cast.
