This potion in effect gives the imbiber the ability to charm
certain undead (ghasts, ghosts, ghouls,
shadows, skeletons, spectres,
wights, wraiths, vampires, and zombies).
The charming ability is similar to
the magic-user spell, charm person
(q.v.). It affects a maximum of 16 hit <see the charm undead (?) spell
in REF5>
dice of undead, rounding down any hit point additions to HD to the
lowest die, i.e. 4 + 1 equals 4 hit dice. The undead are entitled to
saving
throws versus magic only if they have intelligence. Saving throws are
made at -2 due to the power of the potion, but the effects wear off
in from
5-20 rounds. To determine type of undead affected by a particular potion,
roll d10 and consult the following table:
Die Roll | Undead Type |
1 | Ghosts |
2 | Ghasts |
3 | Ghouls |
4 | Shadows |
5 | Skeletons |
6 | Spectres |
7 | Wights |
8 | Wraiths |
9 | Vampires |
0 | Zombies |

OA: This potion is not normally available in Oriental lands. The result should be rerolled.
Q: Will a potion of
undead control,
work on undead who are under
an
evil cleric?s control? Could
an evil
cleric control undead under
that
potion?s influence? If both
effects
are operating in the same
area,
which one takes precedence?
A: Both effects work
normally but not
simultaneously, even on
undead controlled
by other means. The first
form of control
to be applied to a particular
undead monster
works normally until its
duration
expires or until control
is usurped by
another form. A cleric can
make multiple
attempts to establish or
reestablish control
(see the DMG, pages
65-66), while the
potion-user can try only
once per potion
used (see the DMG, page
127).
