Dwarves

< Norse Mythos - DDG >

The dwarves are thought of as troll-like beings in Norse mythology,
and are called such in lejends.
Dwarves will be found living underground in their traditional caves trying to stay far away from all other forms of intelligent life.
They aid the gods for the power that such aid can bring them in the form of returned favors.
There are two principal races of dwarves:
Modsogner and Durin.
The Modsogner are able to produce magic items of a non-violent nature and rival all beings in this art.
The Durin can create magical weapons of tremendous power and often do so for giants and gods alike.

Just so.
The Norse dwarves were like giants in their powers, and the French fey were as potent as fairies in some fairy tales.
Neither is suitable for inclusion as a character race in a FRPG.

I had a young female editor from a major NY publisher that was on the same panel as I at a con ask me how I could steal dwarves from Tolkien. I said:

"Young lady, I'll have you know that I stole my dwarves from the same source the professor did, Norse mythology!"

Tha audience laughed heartily, and she was basically silent thereafter.
