A character with this proficiency must
declare
what type of creature he will specialize
in at the time the proficiency
is first gained. Common examples include
horses,
dogs,
falcons,
pigeons, or elephants. A character can
select a more
exotic species if he wishes.
Any additional proficiency slots gained
can be used to increase
the character’s Proficiency
Check modifier in the type of animal
chosen, or can be used to add another
type of animal that the
character is able to train.
The training of an animal for a typical
role requires three months.
An animal trainer can have up to six animals
in training -- at a given time.
Typical roles include guarding &&
attack (for dogs), riding (for horses), and
heavy labor (for elephants).
Such training grants a +10 modifier to
the character’s Proficiency Check at the end of the training period.
Animals that have been trained in their
typical areas can occasionally be given additional training to increase
the number of functions that they can perform.
Such additional training requires another
three months, and an animal trainer can work with no more than three animals
during this type of training.
Examples of additional training include
training elephants, horses, or dogs for war, and training falcons to retrieve
specific objects. The DM
must decide the chance of success if a
character attempts to
train an animal to perform a task at the
very limits of possibility.
After the advanced training period is over,
the character must
make an unmodified Proficiency Check for
each animal trained.
Success means that the animal can perform
the advanced tasks
it has been taught.

Equipment: This character needs
little in the way of specialized
equipment. At the most, a few harnesses
|| leashes may
be necessary. The training of most types
of animals, however,
does require a great deal of room. Generally,
some kind of outdoor
space is necessary. If an animal trainer
elects to raise or
board animals at the same time,
he must also supply shelter and
food for them.
Cost: 100 gp
Space: 1-20 acres

Falconry (OA: 2 slots, base chance of success = 17 (85%), die roll required for success):
Falconry has always been considered a noble
sport, something
to be enjoyed by those of the court. Characters
with this skill
are proficient in the training &&
handling of hunting birds.
Hunting birds can only be trained when
they are young and require
great patience. Only one person can train
a single bird. The entire process
takes one year to complete, during which
the trainer must work regularly
with the bird. At the end of six months
of training a die roll for success is
made. If it is passed, the bird has been
trained
to hunt and catch birds on the wing and
return to its owner. If either die roll
is failed, the bird is unsuitable for
falconry. <correct this, and make it clear that 2 die rolls are needed
for success>
Once trained, the bird can be handled by
any who have been taught the
commands and calls to control the bird.
When hunting, a die roll for success
is made to see if the hunt has been successful.
If it is, the bird brings
back small gamebirds for its master. In
addition, the bird can also be
taught to attack others. However, few
NPC lords use their birds for such a
purpose as they do not want to risk damaging
the hunting bird.
Hunting birds are sometimes given as gifts,
and the giver of the gift
gains great honor
by doing so.
