Lions generally inhabit warmer climates -- warm temperate to tropical.
They will thrive in any region, from desert to jungle, swamp to savannah. <'x': jungle(rainforest), ok, in AD&D. not generally so, in Our Biosphere>
Lions hunt in packs (prides), the males seldom doing any actual stalking/killing of prey.
The lioness is the real huntress. <link:hunting, wsg>
All these creatures can spring up to 30'.
Males, however, are ferocious {fighters}, and will actively defend their group territory.
Male lions have AC 5 forequarters && AC 6 hindquarters, lionesses have the latter AC.
A typical pride consists of 1-3 males && 1-9 females.

Lions do not climb trees well and they dislike swimming.

Rear Claws: If a lion scores two paw hits during melee it gains the advantage of raking with its two rear claws that turn, each rake causing 2-7 points of damage.

Lair: If found in their lair there will be 1-10 cubs from 30% to 60% grown which will not fight.
There will be 1-4 lionesses with these cubs which will immediately attack.

The lion is the sacred animal of Ishtar && Anhur.

Mountain Lion: This creature is not actually a true lion, but a species of great cat.
They inhabit forests&& deserts as well as mountains.
They are
somewhat cautious, but they are fierce fighters if threatened or cornered.
They can spring upwards 15' or ahead at least 20' to attack. Their rear
claws each rake for 1-4 HP damage.

Spotted lion: Also known as cave lions, spotted lions are larger,
spotted specimens of the common lion.
They roam the plains of the Pleistocene <c>
epoch, with but few being found elsewhere. Their hunting traits and group
closely resemble those of their smaller, more modern kin.

Thank you -- more juicy bits falling from the Master's gaming table... :)

I think overbearing is the most frequently overlooked aspect of AD&D combat.
A few dozen humanoids should be a serious threat to any lone hero, and force him to look for a position of tactical advantage.

My interpretation is that an overborne combatant must be successfully grappled on subsequent rounds, to keep him on the ground (where he is assumedly being stabbed, smashed, etc.). If a group overbears an individual, I then have them divide their efforts in subsequent rounds -- some holding him down, some delivering weapon attacks (at +4 to hit, with no shield or Dex bonuses, of course). If a grappling attempt fails, or if another condition of breaking the grapple is met (e.g. a bend bars roll), the victim can regain his feet immediately.

Is this the way you handled these situations?

Thanks,

Joe

Pretty much, yes.
In a skill based system all that can be managed with opposed roles,
the defender getting penalties,
the attackers bonuses.

An animal pack attacks this way--lions, hyenas, wild dogs, wolves.

Cheers,
Gary

right, i think you see what i mean. i was first there in roughly 1988, and it looked like there was a lot less stuff there last year.

edit: even the dinos seem to be a lot less impressive... but the taxidermy exhibit is awesome.

Boz, I still remember being blown away as a little lad when entering the main hall of the Field Museum. There before me were those huge bull loxodonts locked in battle, while behind them were the bronze stature of the Masai warriors readying their spears, on another pedestal a lion and lioness crouched and snarling, and the third with the speared lions and the warriors in jubilation, one at least with shield held overhead.

Right you are about the taxidermy exhibits there.
That was where I spent most of my time as a boy, looking at them.
We went to the museum about once a month,
with a side jaunt to either the Shedd Aquarium or the Adler Planetarium.

Cheers,
Gary
