WHALE

Sea Shep

Planktivores: Black Whale, Humpback Whale, Right Whale.
Carnivores: Killer Whale, Sperm Whale, White Whale (Beluga).

Whales great && small (for whales) populate the oceans.

Many are plant-eaters* (eg. Black Whale, Humpback Whale, Right Whale),
but a few are carnivores (eg. Killer Whale, Sperm Whale, White (Beluga) Whale).

*plankton, in the real-world.

ENCOUNTER: The latter (carnivorous whales) will occasionally attack humans (killer whales will always do so), and all forms of whales are very dangerous if molested.

Combat: The carnivorous whales attack by biting (5-20 to 15-60, depending on size).
Other whales use their great flukes to smash opponents (1-8 to 5-40, based on size).

Tail Smash: Whales at the surface can smash with their tails, causing damage =equal= to half their number of HD to any creature struck.
<Clarified: smash with tail for d8 damage equal to half hit dice of whale, DMG.214>
    < d8*(HD/2) = surface tail smash >

    <Tail, rewritten>
Tail: The damage from a whale's tail attack depends on whether the target is on the surface, or underwater.
Tail, Surface: Against a surface target, a whale's tail does damage directly proportional to the whale's HD : d8(HD/2).
Tail, Underwater: Against an underwater TARGET, a whale's tail does damage proportional to it's size.

Treasure Type:
Carcass: A whale carcass can be sold in a port for 100 gold pieces per hit die of size.

Ambergris: Sick whales give forth ambergris, a stinking mess which is worth 1,000 to 20,000 gp in a large city.

Stomach Contents (Carnivorous Whales only): The stomach of a carnivorous whale can contain treasure.
A 1% per HD chance is allowed for each coin type, gems, jewelry, and magic items.
The number of coins is 1,000-3,000 per type.
Gems && jewelry will number from 1-20 each.
1-4 magic items can be contained.

The whale is the sacred animal of Shan Hai Ching && Susanowo.

2.27) sperm whale = 22"
The sperm whale swims leisurely at the surface at about 3-9 mph (4.8-14.4 kph). They can sustain a faster pace, when fleeing danger, of 21-27 mph (34-43 kph) for up to an hour. (*1*)

3.17) humpback whale = 20"
Humpback whales normally swim 3-9 mph (4.8-14 kph), but can go up to 15-16.5 mph (24-26.5 kph) in bursts when in danger. Feeding speeds are slower, about 1.2-3.5 mph.
