Centaurs dwell in secluded pastures, far from human habitation.
Roving bands of these creatures always carry weapons, and leaders will carry shields. <small wooden shields?>
    Half of the centaurs in a band will be armed with oaken clubs (equal to morning stars, 1-8 or 1-6 hit points damage/attack),
    one-quarter will have composite long bows and 10-30 arrows (24“ range, 1-6 hit points damage/attack),
    and the remaining quarter will be leaders (AC 4) with shield and lance (1-8 or 2-24 hit points damage/attack).
Leaders will have double treasure.
In melee each centaur attacks two times, once with his weapon and then as a horse with his two fore hooves.

TALK: They speak their own language and that of their alignment.
Centaurs are not generally friendly with humans or dwarves;
they tolerate gnomes and halflings;
they are friendly with elves and like wood elves. <>

LAIR: If centaurs are encountered in their lair it will be a hidden glen with rich
grass and running water. Here, there will be found 1-6 additional males,
females equal to twice the number of males, and young from 5-30 in
number. Females (3 hit dice) and young (1-3 hit dice) do not use weapons
and will only fight with their hooves in a life and death situation. If the
females and young are threatened, the centaurs will be 90% likely to
ransom them with their main treasure.

Question: Can centaurs read scrolls?
Can a centaur leader have psionic ability?
Can a centaur be raised from the dead?

Answer: Whether or not a centaur can read scrolls will depend on how the DM has the campaign structured.
Perhaps such ability would be possible in centaurs with above-average (for centaurs) intelligence, as long as such a creature had some formal training in reading.
Under no circumstances can centaurs possess psionics,
nor can they be raised from the dead.

She thought it was true love she had found
When the handsome young centaur came around.
But one roll in the hay,
And he trotted away;
He was only horsing around.

Hi Gary,

If this is not too specific, I was wondering about some reasons for a couple of AD&D choices, viz., why are only evil nonhuman races listed a having shamans and witch doctors? Specifically, I am thinking about centaurs. It seems like they would be a good candidate for shamans. Was there a specific reason you limited this to evil humanoids?

And if YOU were to bend the rules (hush yo' mouth!) and let, oh, say, centaurs have shamans, what level might you cut them off at?

Again, if this is too specific, just ignore. Thanks.

Well...

As far as any of my reading in mythology went, i never got the slightest hint that centaurs and their ilk had and religous inclination whatsoever.
In the AD&D system, if I was to consider they did, I would be more inclined to allow them druidical indiduals, the same with satyrs and silini.

As to levels of any clerical types, I would suppose something around 7th would be tops.

Cheers,
Gary

Druids! Well, that answers that! Very helpful.

I was actually thinking Chiron, I think his name was, Herakles' centaur tutor, at first when mulling on this.

Thanks, Gary.

By the way--Brewers? Packers? Cubs? White Sox? Bears? Any interest in any of them?

Well...

...that character was more of a sage than a cleric of any sort, no?

Cheers,
Gary
