Effect: There are
actually four spells in one as respects conjure elemental.
The magic-user is able toronjure
an air, earth, fire or water elemental with this spell --
assuming he or she has the
material component for the particular elemental.
Conjured elementals are very
strong -- [see elemental] -- typically having
16 hit dice (16d8).
It is possible to conjure
up successive elementals of different type if the spell caster has memorized
two or more of these spells.
The type of elemental to
be conjured must be decided upon before memorizing the spell.
The elemental conjured up
must be controlled by the magic-user,
i.e. the spell caster must
concentrate on the elemental doing his or her commands,
or it will turn on the magic-user
and attack.
The elemental, however,
will not cease a combat to do so,
but it will avoid creatures
when seeking its conjurer.
If the magic-user is wounded
or grappled, his or her concentration is broken.
There is always a 5% chance
that the elemental will turn on its conjurer regardless of concentration,
and this check is made at
the end of the second and each succeeding round.
The elemental can be controlled
up to 3" distant per level of the spell caster.
The elemental remains until
its form on this plane is destroyed due to damage or the spell's duration
expires.
MC: The material component of this spell (besides the quantity of the element at hand) is a small amount of ...
Conjure
Water Elemental:
Note
that water elementals are destroyed if they move beyond 6" of a body of
water.
Water
Elemental -- water and sand
a large amount of water must be likewise available for conjuration of a
water elemental.
Variant:
Arbane mentions one important difference
from
the norm in the spells
contained
in the book: the conjure elemental
spell
as it is written therein will
summon
only water elementals, but
these
will be friendly to the caster and
will
never attack him or her.
Such
an elemental may (5% chance)
return
to its own plane before the spell
has
expired, rather than attacking, and
although
friendly, it will act only upon
the
commands of the spellcaster, not
helping
independently.

Air Elemental:
Air
Elemental -- burning incense
Conjure
Earth Elemental:
Earth Elemental -- soft clay
Conjure
Fire Elemental:
Fire
Elemental - sulphur and phosphorus
A considerable fire source must be in range to conjure that type of elemental;
N.B.: Special protection
from uncontrolled elementals is available by means of a pentacle,
pentagram, thaumaturgic
triangle, magic circle, or protection from evil spell.
DMG: See the cleric
spell, aerial servant, for details of protective
inscriptions.
Wu
Jen: The wu jen using this spell may conjure an elemental of air,
water, earth, or fire if the wu jen has a large amount of that given element.
The elemental has 16 hit
dice, and answers to the wu jen's commands as long as it is controlled.
The wu jen must concentrate
fully to control an elemental, and in any event there is a 5% chance that
control is lost on the second and following rounds.
An uncontrolled elemental
seeks to attack the wu jen that summoned it.
Control can be maintained
as far away as 3" per level of the wu jen.
Wu Jen.MC: The material
component of this spell depends on the type of elemental.
An air elemental requires
burning incense,
one of earth requires soft
clay,
one of fire requires lit
sulfur and phosphorus,
and a water elemental requires
water and sand or salt.
Although nature/wood is
considered an element, it possesses no elemental creatures.
SA: Conjure Elemental — See comments under “General Topics” earlier in this article.
Para-elementals
<(Ice, Ooze,
Magma,
Smoke)>
are summoned as normal elementals are,
except that there is a chance of not getting
the summoned elemental but one from either of the major elemental planes
adjoining it.
This chance is 100% minus 5% per level
of the summoner.
