59. Slave Lords' Stronghold
Behind a 10-foot-tall stone wall can be
seen the topmost stories and battlements
of the citadel of the nine slave lords. The
wall is patrolled by stern-faced guards.
The only way into the stronghold is
through the double-portcullised gate on
the northern wall. 4 guards stand
beside this gateway.

The 4 guards at the entrance to the
slave lords' compound are all Warriors.
They sharply order away all who
approach too closely. There are a further 10
Vets (guards) on each side of the compound
wall, armed with chain mail, short
composite bows, and broadswords.

Between the wall and the actual fortified
headquarters of the slave lords stretches an
open courtyard. It is covered with close-cut
grass but contains no cover or concealment.
There are 4 minotaur lizards in the courtyard,
one on each side. They have been specially
bred and trained to guard the
courtyard and possess a dim intelligence
that allows them to he ordered and controlled
by the soldiers on the wall. Upon
command they will attack any living thing
within the courtyard, and will fight to the
death when in combat, being deterred by
neither food nor fire.

In addition, there is a further detachment
of 160 1st level <(Vets)> and 40 2d level soldiers <(Warriors)>
which can be called upon if needed from
inside the slave lords' citadel itself. These
will be commanded by a 7th level magic-user
and an 8th level cleric, and will respond
to any attack within 1 turn. The rest of
the city garrison can be summoned within
2 turns by means of a flickering light signal
flashed from the rooftop battlements of
the citadel.
