Also known as "demonhorses" && "hellhorses," nightmares are creatures from the lower planes.
They are ridden primarily by the more powerful demons && devils as well as by night hags.
On occasion they serve as steeds for undead such as spectres, vampires && liches.

The nightmare attacks with its great fangs as well as its burning hooves. <compare: produce flame / produce fire>

Smoke cloud: These creatures breathe out a smoking, hot cloud during combat, <infravision>
and it obscures vision by blinding the eyes and choking its opponent. <compare to some of the smoke spells, e.g. pyrotechnics, as well, effects of smoke in the DSG>
Unless a save is made the opponent attacks at -2 "to hit" && damage dice.

Nightmares can fly, become ethereal <(ethereality)>, and roam the astral plane. <{}?>
They {hate} material life and attack viciously, <no TALK>
even without a rider to {command} them.

Description: The hell horse is gaunt && skeletal with a huge head,
glowing red eyes,
flaming orange nostrils,
and hooves which burn like embers. <as tinderbox?>
The coat is dead black, and the creature's mane and tail are wild && rugged.

The nightmare is the sacred animal of Hades.

<Lords of Darkness [3e] image instead, maybe>
<great image, but head is not huge enough, body is not skeletal enough>
