These
are generally huge beasts of
the mastiff type, bred to guard and attack, or
for
use in hunting large and dangerous
animals such as boars || lions.
Rottweilers
and bull mastiffs are typical examples.
Hold:
In combat, some dogs grab and hold on.
The
hold is inflicted if the dog scores a hit with a roll of 16 or better,
and
it may then do damage equal to half
the normal bite damage each round thereafter with no roll "to hit."
Opponents
so held are considered to be held by one
leg, with appropriate combat penalites (DMG, page 67).
Fighting
breeds do this naturally, and others may be taught the move.
A
determined dog cannot be removed unless it is stunned or killed.

These
may serve in any number of ways.
Some,
like Shetland sheepdogs,
may be drovers' or herdsmen's dogs, while others may be employed as burglar
alarms, or are kept simply as pets.
Still
others are used to harass and delay large game for hunters, or are raised
for the cooking pot, || to attack small animals.

Most dogs built for
speed are of this type,
the optimum size
for running;
greyhounds, salukis,
and Afghan hounds are examples.
Over long distances
other canids might be superior,
but nothing canine
can beat one of these in a sprint.
These dogs usually
pursue jackals, coyotes, gazelles, hares,
and other speedy animals.

slower than their smaller cousins, but their greater size and strength
allows them to attack larger game.
Borzois, Irish wolfhounds,
and Scottish deerhounds are examples of the type.

Domestic dogs are not well represented in official AD&D
game
material. The war
dog and the hobbit's guard dog, both described
in the Monster
Manual, are the sole representatives of this wide-spread
and highly variable
animal. This is unfortunate, since dogs
definitely have
a place within the campaign, particularly a campaign
involving lower-level
PCs. Dogs can be useful allies ||
formidable opponents,
depending respectively on the inventiveness
of the players and
the intelligence && imagination of the DM; with
their keen senses,
even the smallest dogs are the bane of thieves --
PCs and NPCs alike
-- and a war dog is more than =equal= to the
average hired swordsman
or first-level fighter. Many other uses will
doubtless suggest
themselves to the thoughtful referee or player.
Dogs may be employed
as scouts, guards, or uhnters, and are almost
as useful and much
less demanding than hirelings || henchmen. It
follows, then, that
these most ancient, ubiquitous, and multiform of
domestic animals
should be treated in more detail.

Back to the dogs
Dear Dragon,
Thanks for another
great article by Stephen
Inniss ("A dozen
domestic dogs," issue #103).
One additional fact
on water dogs is that the
webbing between
their toes extends much farther
toward their nails
than that of non-water dogs.
This increases their
swimming efficiency and
speed, and the length
of time they can spend in
the water over what
their brethren can do.
Also, in the "Costs" table on page 28, an entry
for "food dog" is listed. Is this the kind of dog
used to hunt rabbits, or is it the kind that would
be served on a plate in Oriental Adventures?
Steve Null
Palm Bay, Fla.
(Dragon #105)
The description of very small normal dogs
mentions that some of the canines in this category
"are raised for the cooking pot." This is what the
entry on the costs table refers to. A dog for hunting
rabbits will probably be a small fighter or a
medium runner (in Stephen's system) and will
cost 17 gp, as per the Players Handbook. -- KM
