Effect: When the cleric
casts a raise dead spell, he or
she can restore life to
a dwarf, gnome, half-elf,
halfling, or human.
The
length of time
which the person has been dead is of importance, as the
cleric can raise dead persons
only up to a certain point, the limit being 1
day for each level of experience
of the cleric, i.e. a 9th level cleric can
raise a person dead for
up to 9 days. Note that the body of the person must
be whole, or otherwise missing
parts will still be missing when the person
is brought back to life.
Also, the resurrected person must make a special
saving throw to survive
the ordeal (see CHARACTER ABILITITIES,
Constitution).
Furthermore, the raised person is weak and helpless in any
event, and he or she will
need one full day of rest in bed for each day he
or she was dead. The somatic
component of the spell is a pointed finger.
Note that newly made undead,
excluding skeletons, which fall within the days
of being dead limit are
affected by raise dead spells cast upon them. The
effect of the spell is to
cause them to become resurrected dead, providing
the constitution permits
survival; otherwise, they are simply dead.
Q: If a character
is killed and receives
a raise dead spell, how
long must he
rest and how many hit points
will
he have?
A: Raised characters
must REST for the
amount of time they have
been dead. The
minimum rest period is one
day. Raised
characters have from 3-17
hp (2d8 + 1),
though this value is reduced
if the PC's
maximum number of HP is
less than
the value rolled.
(153.7)
QUESTION: Although the Players
Handbook does not include them in the description of the Raise Dead spell,
may elves
and half-orcs be raised from the dead?
ANSWER: No, they cannot.
They do not have souls,
and therefore a wish must be used to bring them
back.
Question: If an evil
Cleric is wounded can he heal himself? <cure>
It is assumed that he can’t
heal others as that would be a basically good act.
What about a Raise Dead
spell?
Can he use that if he proves
that his intentions are evil?
Answer: Yes, the cleric
can heal himself and others as well.
He helps keep those nasty
critters (men) alive to further the purpose
of evil.
I know of an evil Cleric
who helps keep a party in Cures.
He benefits from it.
He is rotten to the core
and would kick his mother out of her home if he thought something could
be gained from it.
As long as the Fighters
are doing their job and keeping him from being attacked, sure, he will
adminster to them.
You get more treasure
if your Fighters kill more monsters,
and they can only do that if they are alive.
Besides, if a Cleric didn’t
pass out a few Cures and raise a few dead, he wouldn’t have any worshippers
to kneel before his or her god after a while.
The esrever of the spell,
slay living, allows the victim a saving throw, and if
it is successful, the victim
sustains damage equal only to that caused by a
cause serious wounds spell,
i.e. 3-17 hit points. An evil cleric can freely use
the reverse spell; a good
cleric must exercise extreme caution in its
employment, being absolutely
certain that the victim of the slay living
spell is evil and that his
or her death is a matter of great necessity and for
good, otherwise the alignment
of the cleric will be sharply changed.
Shukenja:
A shukenja utilizing a raise dead spell can restore life to a dead body
that has been dead up to as many
days as the level of the
shukenja. The spell can be used to raise any human, demi-human, or humanoid
creature
of at least low Intelligence.
The individual being raised must make a system shock roll and, if successful,
have
full bed rest for one day
for each day the character was dead.
Shukenja.Slay Living:
The spell's reverse, slay living, allows the target a saving throw
versus spell which, if successful, still subjects the target to 3-17 points
of damage.

Bringing in a new one, from

What is the restrictions
(if any) on clerics casting resurection/raise dead on those NOT of the
faith?
Are those restrictions lessened
when the cleric is a PC?
Heh...
That's one I prefer to leave
in the capable hands of the DM of the campaign
to decide.
I allow any Good alignment
cleric to cast resurection/raise dead on a like N/PC, with the "donation"
varying from reasonable to quite otherwise depending on regree of alignment
difference--
and the relationship of
the two deities served, if different.
Cheers,
Gary
